A The Transition Institute 1.5 doctoral student has received a prestigious award. The Association of Energy Economists (AEE) honored Guillaume Wald for his paper on energy economics: ‘The Effect of Energy Efficiency Obligations on Residential Energy Use: Empirical Evidence from France.’

“The Energy Savings Certificates (ESC) mandate energy suppliers to finance a volume of energy savings by subsidizing home renovations. Certified investments under the ESC framework amounted to approximately 4 billion euros in 2020. I assess a maximum effect of renovations funded by ESCs of less than 30%, a particularly disappointing outcome that jeopardizes France’s emission reduction targets,” argues Guillaume Wald. This analysis convinced the AEE jury, which annually awards a prize for the best doctoral article in energy economics, recognizing the quality of the contribution to debates, especially policy-related, and the addressed issues.

Guillaume Wald is conducting research for his thesis titled ‘Econometric Analyses of Policies Promoting Energy Renovation in Homes’ under the supervision of Matthieu Glachant (CERNA Mines Paris – PSL) and Bruno Duplessis (CES Mines Paris – PSL). His thesis aims to evaluate public policies supporting energy renovation. In his upcoming article, he will discuss the impact of these policies on employment in the renovation sector in France. ‘Indeed, the development of a qualified workforce is fundamental to enhance both the quantity and energy performance of renovations,’ explains Guillaume Wald.

Before embarking on his thesis, Guillaume Wald completed the APE Master’s program (Analysis and Economic Policy) at the Paris School of Economics (PSE).
