On Thursday, September 12, 2024, The Transition Institute 1.5 organized its 10th TTI.5 Webinar, which focused on the theme « Deciphering IPCC Scenarios: Issues in Climate Forecasting ». This webinar was conducted in French.

The 6th Assessment Report of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) was published between 2021 and 2023. These reports provide an overview of scientific knowledge related to climate change. They offer a summary of the state of climate physics (Working Group I), impacts and adaptation (Working Group II), and mitigation solutions (Working Group III). These reports rely, among other things, on the compilation and analysis of several hundred scenarios produced by scientific communities worldwide. Understanding the process of their development, the use of these scenarios, and their limitations is crucial for interpreting them.

Program of the Webinar TTI.5 #10:

  • « Négocier l’espace des possibilités climatiques : analyse de la construction des bases de données de scénarios du GIEC depuis les années 1990 » [Translation in English: “Negotiating the Space of Climate Possibilities: Analysis of the Construction of the IPCC Scenario Databases Since the 1990s”],
by Béatrice COINTE | Research Fellow at the CNRS and Researcher at the CSI Mines Paris – PSL ; Recipient of theCNRS Bronze Medal 2024
Béatrice COINTE’s research explores the intersection of environmental considerations and economic organization. Combining ethnography of science, economic sociology, and socio-historical analysis, her current work investigates the creation of energy and climate scenarios from the 1970s to the latest IPCC report and their role in defining the climate issue.

by Nadia MAÏZI | Director of theCMA Mines Paris – PSL and of The Transition Institute 1.5 ; Co-author of the IPCC 6th Report
Professor at Mines Paris-PSL, Nadia MAÏZI is an expert in energy system modeling, optimization, and foresight analysis. She co-directs the Chair for Prospective Modeling in Service of Sustainable Development and has served as the French delegate to the ETSAP (Energy Technology System Analysis Program) under the International Energy Agency (IEA) since 2008.
  • « Des scénarios climatiques pour banques centrales et superviseurs, l’approche du NGFS » [Translation in English: “”Climate Scenarios for Central Banks and Supervisors: The NGFS Approach”]
by Paul CHAMPEY and Clément PAYEROLS | Banque de France
Paul Champey is a specialist in sustainable finance and economics at Banque de France, and Clément Payerols is an environmental economist also at Banque de France. Launched during the first edition of the One Planet Summit in December 2017, the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) brings together central banks and supervisors committed to better addressing the risks posed by climate change to global financial stability.
