Clim2Power (CMA)

Clim2Power is an EU research project developed by several research centers from different countries. The project contributes to research on tackling the environmental challenges facing the European electricity system, in particular the target of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

The aim is to provide all potential final users (policymakers, stakeholders, etc.) with indicators of the climate impact on hydropower, wind and solar production, and of electricity demand at a seasonal scale and in the long term. All of this information is accessible through a web interface.

The project also takes a totally new approach to the consideration of climate variability in investment decisions related to planning the European electricity system. As shown in Figure 1, climate data are first translated into hydroelectric, solar and wind power production. These values are then employed in energy system models to indicate the gains made, e.g. in CO2 emissions reductions, when renewable sources are introduced into the energy system. The major innovation of this project is that the pipeline is implemented considering several possible future climate scenarios. The energy indicators extracted from this analysis are consistent across the entire European area.
