To tackle the urgent issue of climate change and pursue the IPCC’s recommendation of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era, our societies must commit to carbon neutrality. To date, the much-awaited transition cannot be observed anywhere on the planet.
We are convinced that it is imperative to adopt a systemic, holistic approach to develop the levers of this transition towards carbon neutrality, so that some people’s solutions don’t become other people’s problems. This calls for interdisciplinary research that interacts with all stakeholders of society, simultaneously integrating social, political, economic and technical constraints, via different temporal and spatial perspectives.
The Transition Institute 1.5 (TTI.5), 1.5 to echo the temperature target put forward by the IPCC, is an initiative launched by Mines Paris – PSL with the support of its Foundation. Specifically set up to design the low-carbon transition, the institute’s ambition is to provide informed scientific responses to the huge challenge of carbon neutrality.
To deploy a holistic approach to thinking out a true low-carbon transition, TTI.5 draws from the diverse disciplinary fields covered by Mines Paris – PSL research centers and, beyond that, from national and international partnerships. In guaranteeing an original, independent, and innovative scientific approach, TTI.5 intends to promote a realistic, coherent vision of the low-carbon transition.
